Why can’t I pair my Yi Home Camera?

If you are now suffering from any App downloading/pairing/connecting failures related issues with Yi Home Camera, this article is a best solution summary for you.

Currently, there are two most common issues:

  • HW and App versions mismatch
  • Camera firmware is too old

Preparation work

skip this if you have successful experience to pair before
  1. make sure your App version is up to date
  2. make sure your Wi-Fi SSID and password is correct and there is no any other security related settings on your router, such as:
    • No static IP address assignment
    • No MAC address filter
  3. 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is supported only.

ISSUE 1: Product and App version mismatch

  1. Identify the product version of your camera

Please check the first 4 characters on the back of the camera as below  figure ,

  • if the format is [0~9][0~9][A~Z][A~Z], the 3rd and 4th characters standard for the country code (case insensitive):

CN: Chinese Version 

US / TW /KR/other Country Code: International Version

  • all other format strings: Chinese Version

Please be aware of that:

Chinese version is to be used in China mainland only.

International version is to be used in US/TW/KR only.

2. Install the matching App

You have to install the correct App, otherwise the camera can be never paired.

Currently we have official selling channels in CN/US/KR/TW only, in any other countries/areas, you can’t find this App in your local Google Play or App Store. Error message may be nothing/this App is not available in your market/your device is not support this App/etc.

Android Device:

Chinese VersionApp Download

International Version: install from your local Google Play

IOS Device:

Chinese Version: Switch to China App Store then install.

Alternately, you can also try the App Mi Smart Home.

International Version: install from your local App Store

ISSUE 2: Camera firmware is too old to pair

We always suggest customers to keep the camera firmware version update to date to get better product performance.

If you have already prepared the matching Camera and App, but still failed in camera pairing or you found the camera working improperly even after reset.

In most case, you can fix it via updating the camera firmware manually.

1. Download the latest version of firmware

Chinese Version:   Download Link         Backup Link

International Version:  Download Link (US Version)

2. Do manually update following the instruction.

Note: the firmware version must match your camera version. You can flash a Chinese version camera with any other version of firmware and power-on it, but it can never be paired.

    1. We don’t suggest to use China version out of China mainland. And we’re now planning to establish the official selling channels in Malaysia for local version.

      1. CN version is only officially selling in China mainland. CN version sold of out China is not authorized by Xiaoyi company, it’s individual behavior, not certificated and protected by local.

      2. I am using my Xiaomi Yi in Malaysia, I bought it from Banggood. I was using it since May 2015. I can get video even when I was in Australia.
        When my Samsung Galaxy S4 was update to Android 5.01, in December 2015, The Xiaomi Home camera icon was disappeared from my hand phone, My phone was not able to connect to the camera earlier, I tried again today (2nd Jan 2016), using the version “yicamera-v2.10.0.6_20151105_release_umeng.apk”. I got it reinstalled. The Smart Home Camera is working now.

        From the serial Number printed at the back of the Camera, I think I had purchased the China Version of the camera.
        Another advantage I have is, I can read Chinese, and understand spoken Mandarin.
        One more point, I placed my camera very close to the WiFi router,(just next to it)

    2. Hi, I bought a Yi 1080p home camera online & only found out it is a china version. I followed the steps that you provided above to change both firmware & IOS app version to china version. However, after the link to the wifi successfully, the camera still can’t link to my IOS device by saying “the camera can only be used within china area” in chinese. Could you advise what I can do next?

        as we have yi account and work on yi smart camera or Mi smart home but can’t not login on yi home need to new registry.

For those bought the China Version, First thing you need to know do not use the playstore App it will not work, you need to DL china version APP in order to connect to Yi Home Camera, Never upgrade your Firmware, Just Ignorethe upgrade version, if you upgrade to latest Firmware it will never connect, solution is to downgrade Firmware to older version manually.

  3. Time zone off in Chinese app in US. Can you program way to switch recording time zone? Works well in iPhone app but very frustrated with Android.

  4. Hi, the first 5 figures of the QR code behind my yicamera reads as HPPV6..
    I’m able to connect the yicamera to my Wi-Fi, the 1st scan of the QR code as provided on my android phone (via YI Home – Green coloured APP) appeared to be successful. However, during the “connecting phase” the yicamera indicated that the QR code (initially scanned through the Andorid APP) is invalid, and request for the set-up to be re-initiated.
    Can you assist on this error msg?

    The 1st letters of the QR code at the back of my yicamera reads as HPPV6.
    I’m able to connect the yicamera to my Wi-Fi, and also to scan the QR code from my Android phone to the yicamera (via YI Home APP), which appears to be successfully initially.
    However, during the connecting phase, the yicamera indicated that the QR Code was invalid, and the connection process have to be reset and re-initiated.
    Can you kindly assist on this error?

    1. There used to be time scroll bar which had orange /red shade to indicate continuous video recording. I could just scroll and view old recording. But now it does not record. No orange or red shade. What’s wrong?
    2. Can the motion detected recording length be increased from default 6 seconds??

  11. The first 4 characters on the back of the camera are “22ZE”, I want use it in US. The camera can connected to network (camera said ‘wifi connection successful ‘), but my phone can not be paired with it. After step testing server connection, the app shows ‘Fail to load’. ‘Please reset the camera’

    1. The camera is not U.S. version, if the package is printed in Chinese, then we can confirm it’s CN version, you need to follow this blog and install the correct App to use.

    I also bought a CN camera from Gearbest but I’m from Europe.
    I am able to pair with the chinese app and see the camera, but it is a mess.
    Is it possible to upgrade the firmware to the international version and use the international app from the Playstore?

    1. Same here. I’m using the lates CN firmware from the site mentioned above (1.8.5.1L_201510301024). Also installed the Android app directly from Apk. When I startup the app, I logon with my MI account. Next I configure the camera and everything works fine. When the popup shows up saying and update is available, I press the update button. After install is completed, the app shows the camera but crashes after showing the stream for some seconds. However, if I call the settings menu, it will not crash. Only when the livestream is shown. Please fix this!

      1. Same problem here. Newest CN firmware (1.8.5.1N_201512212009) and android app. I use it on my OnePlus One with Android 5.1.1. I also already wrote an email to the xiaoyi support.

    3. Sanjeev which app you are using? Is it the Chinese one or the international one. Does the Chinese app has the English menu? I am planning to buy the CN version. If I need to use the Chinese app then I am worried about the navigation.

    1. sorry for inconvenience. we suspect there is a language related bug in latest release. please try to change your phone language to English or download the previous App version (updated in blog)

    But I would know if it is possible to connect it to my NVR (that’s why I bought it) ?

    I brought Yi smart camera in Thailand. I was trying to connect it to mobile app but can’t find it. I uploaded the SD card with English firmware but still doesn’t working. Could you please send the link to latest firmware and manual by English version?

    1. I installed Mobile app for Android phone by Play Store (Samsung Note 4 and Asus Zenfone5) / I installed Mobile app for iOS by Apple Store (iPhone 4s)
    2. I plugged in “Yi” to power cable.
    3. I was trying to connect to both of device but didn’t work.

    P.S. I tried both of Android and iOS but didn’t work. I read and tried all above directions but my devices still can’t find “Yi”

  23. I have CN version with Mi Smart Home iOS app and live in UK. This used to work very well (only one problem burn in time CN time). After updating both camera and app to latest versions they will not pair. Will it ever work again or do I have to buy a new international version camera?

  25. Hello, I have a issue with the CN version cameras that have been working perfectly in the US for 3 months or more. I recently got a new phone and the could not get the YI home app to transfer so I had to download again in the google play store. Now this app will not recognize my login from the MI home. Why all of a sudden do my CN cameras have issues here in the states when they worked for many months. And on my current Galaxy Tab the YI home app that Ive had installed for 3 months or more is still functioning correctly. How can i get this resolved? Another thing is the MI App is only in CN and the YI app was fine in english.

  26. i recently bought 4 xiaoyi camera in Malaysia, all working fines with the above method. unfortunately after firmware update, 2 of it failed to work, it auto shut down after notify that the cam is for use in china mainland only.. any solution?

  27. Hi, please help to get your team to resolve country restriction issue.

    If XiaoMi wish to take the international market, there should not be any restriction on country.

    I bought a CN version without knowing this country restriction and now, I am stuck with this useless camera since I am not living in China.

    Hope there is a firmware to resolve this issue as soon as possible as you can already see, there are a lot of people who bought CN version without knowing and having problem on it.

  28. I have china version camera, i have installed the english version apk app and everything is working good.
    I have 2 routers at my home, when i connect my smartphone to the same router where is connected the camera the camera has just 2-3 seconds difference from real time, but when i connect from the other router the difference is 10-15 seconds, and loading time for the first time is very big.
    Does it mean that china version use china servers? If it uses china servers than please give an option on next firmware update to change servers, timezone, add the option to choose the date from the calendar for videos stored on sd card.
    Please give support to us non china users because are so much, i have bought this camera from aliexpress, i didn’t knew that there are china and other countries versions, and when i bought this camera, the seller on aliexpress sold more than 8000 yi home cameras. I didn’t trusted to the seller description but to MI brand.

  29. I am from Germany and I bought the Cam from Gearbest (CN Version). With the Chinese App i could pair with the Cam and watch the Stream for 1-2 Seconds. After that the App always crashes.
    Then the App told me to update the Firmware from something_N to 1.8.5.1L_201510301024. After I did that, the Cam always tells me in chinese: “Chinese Mainland Version” … and turns off. So now the Cam is useless to me and was a waste of money.
    Any help here, or should i just try to send it back?

    and i’m having problem with this CN ver of camera
    i understand that CN ver is only for use in china only
    as you have mention before it only support Beijing time, isn’t Singapore and Beijing time the same? +8hr?

  32. I do not understand because they do not enable the option to install a firmware international ants on a Chinese room … we have bought this product when it was available only in China.
    I just wish my room ants work well, please enable this function.
